BREDHURST WOODS - NOTICE of WORK
With the agreement of landowners, we are carrying out maintenance work
on their behalf. Recently, we have begun coppicing the site; cleared
fly tipping and erected new fencing at White Hill. All work conducted
is in accordance with the Bredhurst Hurst Management Plan, compiled
for us by Kent Wildlife Trust.
Over
the next few weeks the following maintenance work is planned (see here for map):-
Scrub Clearance
An area adjacent to KH56 was once chalk grassland. Over the years
it has become overgrown and neglected. Within the next couple of
weeks contractors
will remove the scrub, allowing the area to rejuvenate. Footpath & Bridlepath
Repairs
The Royal Engineers begin our path restoration on 12 November and will
be on site for about a month, starting on bridlepath (KH56) which leads
to White Hill. Once completed, other paths in the area will be repaired
and substantial fencing will be erected to protect The Hurst from off-road
vehicles. Access will remain for horse riders and walkers. BWAG are
grateful to the Royal Engineers for providing the manpower and machinery
free of charge and over £2,000 towards the cost of materials.
BWAG has secured a further £18,000 required to complete the project.
Byway - Access Restrictions
By December, KCC plan to install gates at the Detling and Bredhurst end
of the byway. This road currently allows off-road vehicles into Bredhurst
Hurst. Once the gates are installed, which are designed to allow horse
and pedestrian access, vehicular access will be restricted to landowners
and permit holders only. Covert CCTV will be used to help protect the
area from non-permit holders and will assist the Police to prosecute
offenders.
Coppicing
Coppicing is well underway and Kent Wildlife Trust is extremely pleased
with the progress made. Contractor will shortly begin work on a new
section of woodland which runs parallel to the byway up to the boundary
of Monkdown Wood.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Hopefully, the work planned
will ensure that horse riding and walking in the area will be much safer
and more enjoyable.
