A guide to the ancient and notable trees of Bredhurst Village The main wood of Bredhurst, know as Bredhurst Hurst is composed primarily of Hornbeam, Hazel and Sweet Chestnut with Yew trees along the southern boundary on the top of the ridge. In the past the Hurst has clearly been managed as there is abundant evidence of coppicing. The name Hurst is an old English name meaning wood so the village is actually named after the wood. The lane leading down to the Hurst is a mix of Field Maple, Hazel, Hawthorn, Ash, Holly and the occasional Oak and Yew. There are three Tree preservation orders covering the parish of Bredhurst. These cover specific areas rather than individual trees and are for Bredhurst Hurst, Purple Hill and the grounds of Green Court. This is the start of a tree trail for Bredhurst village and is a work in progress.
